Branding is an integral part of business in the 21st century and lawyers should see their practice as business and brand it.
What you are known for is what branding is all about. And you may ask, what else could a lawyer be known for other than legal practice? I ask you to take a little tour of Google and research some lawyers you truly admire and who lead the space of legal practice even in Nigeria. You will find out that they are known for something even in the legal space. You too can do that. You may not be making your living off that sector right now, but if you have an area in law you are interested in, start to brand yourself in that direction today.
Simple ways of branding could be through your letterheads, Business Cards, websites, blogs, delivering papers, engaging in TV and Radio talks and even words of mouth. People can only call you what you call yourself. One of the best way of all is in publishing especially online. Find any of the online journals, websites or blogs to publish yourself. The world is now a global village made possible by ICT. Putting your practice, name and brand online in this age and time should be of help to your practice.
Several persons have received calls for services engagements via journals that published their articles. I remember receiving a call from Australia on Emissions trading for LDCs. My firm was published in a website that promotes Clean Development Mechanism. It is fascinating to see that one could deal across the globe without physical contacts with prospects and clients.
